Ryton Golf Club is very sad to advise members that Billy Pope, a long-standing member well known to many, died yesterday (31 January 2021) after battling first cancer and then Covid-19.
Billy was a member of the Club for over 50 years, one of three brothers, all of whom were members of Ryton in the past. The tradition of the Club was always at the forefront of everything he did for it, including a spell as (a very knowledgeable) Chairman of the Greens Committee at the time when his closest friend, Steve Dix, was the Club Secretary. He played for the team for a number of years, and whilst he could be outspoken he was always very supportive of the Club. A good friend to those around him, a good golfer and a longstanding and very loyal member of Ryton Golf Club, Billy will be sorely missed by everyone who knew him.
A special mention is required of, and our thanks go out to Steve Dix who had been looking after Billy over the past year or so.
Out thoughts are with Billy's friends and family at this sad time.
